Homemade Pizza

Pizza is a weekly meal in my house. Originally it was the easy Friday night meal; order and pick up on our way home. Now, it has become part of our "Stay In Date Night". We usually put the kids to bed a bit early and make dinner together. It is fun, and taste great! Plus it is not as greasy as take-out.

Pizza Dough

1 package active dry yeast
1 cup warm water
2 cups flour
2 tbls +1 tbls olive oil
1 tsp salt
2 tsp + 1 tsp  honey
1 tbls Oats (Optional)

In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, it should be frothy.  In a bowl mix flour, 2 tbls olive oil, salt, 2 tsp honey and the yeast. Knead with your hand until it is a stiff dough. Cover with a tea towel and let it sit until it has doubled in size; about 30 minutes.

Pizza Sauce

1 cup Tomato Sauce
¼ cup onion- finely chopped
1 garlic clove- finely chopped
1 tbls olive oil
Salt and Pepper

In a sauce pan, heat Olive oil, add onion and garlic and sautee until soft. Add tomato sauce and stir until bubbling. Salt and pepper to taste.

Pizza Time!

Preheat oven to 375f. Form dough into a ball and then roll out on a floured surface. When the dough is the shape of a pizza crust place it on to a pizza stone or pan. Spread the sauce on the dough and then add your favorite toppings and cheese. In a small bowl mix remaining olive oil, honey and oats on the crust. Bake for 25-30 minutes. I always check it at 20 minutes and then every 5 minutes after until done.

Toppings: I love sausage, ham, and pepperoni. I usually chop up some mixed veggies in the food processor to add a “health touch”.
NOTE: I highly recommend a pizza stone! They are fantastic and make the crust just right. Be sure to follow the directions that come with your pizza stone for baking as they do differ from the above instructions.

Let me know what your favorite pizza is!

  1. A fave around here is to take leftover roasting chicken, add BBQ sauce (instead of pizza sauce) red onion, roasted garlic, feta and red pepper (or green or yellow)

    OR

Take the leftover chicken, pesto base, garlic, feta, spinach
